News from Christ King School:
April 2007: Students and staff at Christ-King School wrapped up their Pennies for Patients cancer fundraiser campaign last week. |
The school community brought in $1424.00 to support research and help children who are under going treatment for leukemia and other blood cancers. Teachers helped the fundraising effort by auctioning off deeds that the students could bid on. Jaclyn Delhommeau and Steven Jackson were the winners. Delhommeau took a pie in the face from one of her kindergarten students, Connor Wyness. Jackson coloured his hair pink for the final week before letting Christ-King, Pennies for Patients school coordinator Maru Kackuk shave his hair off in front of the students.
Kachuk was very pleased with the campaign and stated, “I never imagined we could raise this much. I would have been really happy with $300.00 dollars, so raising $1424.00 is amazing.”
During the Pennies for Patients campaign students had a chance to meet and spend the day with Travis Malcolm, a young boy who had cancer. Travis talked to the students about his experiences in the hospital and his treatment. Students also presented Travis with a framed and autographed picture of Ryan Smith as thanks for being the Honoured Hero for their Pennies for Patients Fundraiser.
Leukemia and lymphoma are forms of cancer that strike the blood-forming tissues in children and adults. Each year 94,200 people are diagnosed with leukemia and related cancers.
