News from School of Hope (2003):
Jennifer Eadon, a School of Hope grad from 2002, recently participated in a panel discussion at the International Special Education Conference in Calgary. She spoke about how she was able to utilize technology in overcoming her differences. |
She gave credit to her success for the support and assistance she received throughout high school from family and teachers. In particular, it was their positive contributions that enabled her to fulfill her lifelong dream of pursuing post secondary education in the field of nursing. She spoke of overcoming hurdles in not sharing with people about her learning difference due to embarrassment, but stated that this conference gave her the courage to speak about her difficult journey. “Asking for help with your learning disabilities is a humbling experience. As a young adult, you are expected to be able to function independently. By asking for help, you are admitting that you are not independent but require assistance. Help to get by in life is what we all need because no one possesses the knowledge or skills for every situation in life. We need each other,” Jennifer said. She has since spoken at the Calgary Learning Centre to a crowded room of high school students from the area, as well as representatives from Mt. Royal College and University of Calgary. She was interviewed live on CBC’s Calgary Eye Opener. As a result of her presentation at the international conference last October, Jennifer has received accolades from across Canada and invitations from as far away as Nfld. to speak at other functions. She instructed pediatricians in attendance how they could assist their patients in circumstances similar to Jennifer’s. Another student from our excellent program at School of Hope.
Way to go, Jennifer!
